Summary “The Unguarded Moment” brings its two main characters full circle as they finally trade places. This recap of Why Women Kill season 2, episode 9, “The Unguarded Moment”, contains spoilers. All throughout Why Women Kill Season 2, Alma Fillcott has wanted to be Rita Castillo. She wanted her money and dresses and social standing; her influence over the Garden Club’s chittering coven. But, at the start, it didn’t seem like Alma also wanted Rita’s moral flexibility. She envied Rita’s popularity and status because she felt like she was more deserving of it – she was a better, nicer person. In “The Unguarded Moment”, Alma has finally supplanted her rival, but she has become a worse version of her; someone even more unscrupulous and conniving. The warning signs were there. Alma filling her living room with a dead woman’s belongings should have been a clue that she didn’t know where to stop. Stealing Mrs. Yost’s furnishings – after burying her body, no less – was the first time Alma realized she could take something without having earned it. She evidently got a taste for doing so. Once you start thinking that way, you begin to see things differently. To Alma, membership of the Garden Club didn’t just seem attainable, but something she was owed and entitled to. Here, we see that membership isn’t enough. A petty rivalry with Joan is a good excuse to seek the top spot, but it’s exactly that – an excuse. Even unopposed, Alma would have likely sought to elevate herself further, drunk on the high of having already gotten away with it thus far. Alma’s downfall is deliberately juxtaposed with Rita’s awakening in Why Women Kill season 2, episode 9. Thanks to her stint in jail, the death of Isabel, the loss of Scooter to her arch-nemesis, and her complete financial ruination, Rita has realized not just that she has nobody but that her losses are nobody’s fault but her own. She gloated to Carlo about her relationship with Scooter, who she also mistreated. She sought to disinherit Catherine. She treated Alma like dirt. But we’ve come to learn over the last few episodes that Rita’s persona was largely a fiction. She came from nothing, escaped the grip of abuse, and was forced to reinvent herself. For the first time in her life, she was a woman of means, not a woman who had to sell herself just to get by. You can see how that drastic change in circumstance might go to someone’s head enough that they’d employ their cousin as their maid for a decade and belittle those they perceived to be lesser. Of course, Rita knew that someone like Alma wasn’t truly lesser; only a few years ago, she would have seen her modest lifestyle as something to covet. Her cruel treatment of Alma was her lashing out at her old self, mocking the things she never had because deep down she knows that she doesn’t truly deserve the things she has now. This all makes her a more complex and sympathetic character than the spiraling Alma, who at this point is becoming more and more irredeemable simply because she can. But tragedy strikes in Why Women Kill episode 9. Desperate for help, Rita turns to Scooter, who clandestinely offers to give her money, even if he doesn’t want to step out on Catherine. But Catherine reads the situation wrong. She follows Scooter and sees his brief, titular unguarded moment with Rita as him returning to his old ways. He tries to defend himself, and Rita tries to defend him, but Catherine isn’t having any of it. She pulls a gun, aims at Rita, and fires. The first bullet hits Scooter, who throws himself in the way of it. The second misses Rita and hits Bertram, who happens to be out on the street nearby. In some ways, Bertram being a not-so-innocent bystander in Catherine’s moment of madness lets him off the hook. He had already taken to drinking and communing with a dead woman. Vern had discovered that the unique combination of chemicals used to kill Carlo was frequently purchased by the veterinarian. Alma had confessed to Dee, who had discovered Mrs. Yost’s body in the garden, that Bertram was an adulterer and a murderer. The net was closing around him. Now, it has nobody else to close around but his widow, who is arguably more deserving of his fate than he was. Time will tell quite what the finale has in store for her. What did you think of Why Women Kill season 2, episode 9? Let us know in the comments.

Paramount+ "Why Women Kill" became one of the most popular original offerings on CBS All-Access when the series launched in August 2019. Now rebranded as Paramount+, the streaming service renewed the series for a second season in October of 2019, just before the last few episodes of the show were posted to the platform. Season 1 of the series, created by Marc Cherry "Popular," "Desperate Housewives", focused on three different women living in three different time periods — 1963, 1984, and 2019 – all bound together by the fact that they had lived in the same mansion located in Pasadena, California, and eventually became murderers. The first season stars Ginnifer Goodwin 1963's Beth Ann Stanton, Lucy Liu 1984's Simone Grove, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste 2019's Taylor Harding as the three central figures in the narrative. Each character has a different motivation for killing someone close to them, and over the season's run, the twisting path that bound them together was revealed. So what's ahead for "Why Women Kill" as season 2 gears up? What will change, what will stay the same, and what will keep viewers tuned in? You'll be able to binge the show in the early summer Paramount+ It's perhaps unsurprising for readers to learn that the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily stalled production on Season 2 of "Why Women Kill." On November 11, 2020, the series temporarily suspended production along with three other projects filming at CBS Studio Center due to a positive COVID-19 test among one of the show's shared production team members, according to Deadline. Production apparently resumed near or on November 13, as it did for another show affected by the pause, and casting notices about the season have been posted regularly throughout the winter months. According to a recently released promo on YouTube, Season 2 of the show will debut on Paramount+ on June 3, 2021. That means that you'll be able to watch the whole show in the early summer. There's also no word on whether the show's adjacent true-crime podcast, "Why Women Kill Truth, Lies and Labels," will return. A whole new cast will move into the mansion for Season 2 of Why Women Kill Ilya S. Savenok/Getty Images Season 2 is set in 1949 and will, according to The Wrap, focus on housewife Alma Allison Tolman, whose casting notes, per Variety, describe her as "timid and awkward, yet optimistic." She dreams of being allowed to join Rita Castillo's exclusive gardening club and marrying off her daughter, Dee. But soon she learns that her seemingly kind and good-natured husband, veterinarian Bertram Nick Frost, has a dark secret that changes everything. According to Deadline, Lana Parrilla will play the aforementioned Rita Castillo, who entertains herself with an extramarital affair with her younger lover Scooter Matthew Daddario as she waits for her elderly husband, the evil Carlo uncast as of press time, to die. Her other mode of entertainment is playing queen bee at her garden club. Scooter is described as a wannabe actor, "charming but not so bright." Alma and Bertram's daughter, Dee, will be portrayed by Cannon. Dee is described as "brassy" but "ungainly" and works as a waitress at a local diner. Jordane Christie will play "tough, rugged" detective Vern, whom Rita hires to investigate Scooter. Carlos' unmarried daughter, Catherine, described as "prim and proper," will be played by Veronica Falcón. Catherine has returned to Pasadena after a mysterious accident, hates Rita, and is forever looking for a way to ruin her life. Kerry O'Malley will portray the "spoiled" Mavis, per Deadline, a member of Rita's garden club who has a "beautiful singing voice." Another club member — described in loglines as "beautiful but entitled," will be Brenda, portrayed by Cynthia Quiles. Virginia Williams will play club member Grace — but unlike the others in the club, Grace is kind, sincere, and forms a friendship with Alma. Jessica Phillips will play Joan, the final member of Rita's club, whose son is having an affair with an older woman. Eileen Galindo will portray Rita's "wry" maid and confidant, Isabel. Rounding out the cast is Broadway star Rachel Bay Jones, who will play Maisie, a nightclub singer who becomes friendly with a vet, according to Playbill. A new plotline awaits viewers David Livingston/Getty Images In a twist on the show's anthology theme, all of the plotlines taking place in Season 2 of "Why Women Kill" will occur during the same year instead of being spread apart by decades, though the season will have at least two protagonists. Season 2's logline states "This season of the dark comedy features a new ensemble cast and storylines set in 1949 that will explore what it means to be beautiful, the hidden truth behind the facades people present to the world, the effects of being ignored and overlooked by society, and finally, the lengths one woman will go in order to finally belong." Casting news suggests that the entire season will revolve around the social dynamics within the tony garden club run by Rita, newcomer Alma's struggle to become a part of the group, the familial struggles of both women, specifically with their less-than-ideal marriages and imperfect daughters, and the possibility of Rita's homicide at the hands of Catherine, Alma, or even Scooter.

Alma doesn't want to believe that Bertram has a secret. He's the kindest man she ever met, which she learned the night Tom Madison broke her heart. When she runs outside after seeing Tom kissing another woman, she finds Bertram taking a fallen baby bird back to its nest. He tears his tux, and when he thinks he should go home as a result, she says she'd dance with him no matter how he looked. Alma is completely unprepared for the evil that is about to burst forth. When she revisits the box, she sees the fan and yesterday's date. Rita meets with Vern. She doubts Scooter is having an affair with a fat cleaning later. He wonders if she cares if Carlo lives or dies. Carlo's daughter, Catherine, is there to irritate Rita. The family trust reveals that she's in charge of Carlo's medical decisions. She's taking Carlo back to Texas. Scooter visits Dee at the diner, and Vern arrives. She recognizes him and tells him she saw him last night. Dee stands up for Scooter as good people when the guy says he humiliates her, and then he sees Scooter looking at himself in a napkin holder. Alma went into town to learn about her husband's collection. She visits Maisie to discover her dead on the couch. Maisie looks peaceful, but she was anything but when she died. Alma finds the outline of the fan on the wall. Grace visits the vet, and she gives Bertram chocolates for returning the broach. Bertram rushes home in quite a state. Alma awaits him on the stairs. They need to talk. Alma confronts him and begs for him to tell her something, which he ultimately admits. Even when he says it, Alma cannot believe it. They clearly have a difference of opinion as to whether he's been helpful. She's distraught, and when he offers her a sedative, she flees. He tries to explain that he eases lonely, sick people out of life to help them. The first person begged him to do it. Her peaceful face afterward turned into a calling. Alma doesn't hear him, though, as she's jumping out of the window in front of Mrs. Yost. Rita asks Scooter to move in with him. She wants him to say he's her chauffeur. She brings up the cleaning lady in reference to his pigsty of an apartment. In light of that, he suggests they leave things as they are. He wants her as his lover, not his boss—millions of dollars and financing a film starring her former chauffeur changes his mind. Rita sees Alma in the street. Grace went on and on about Alma, and she wants to nominate her for the spot in the club. When Rita says they can't admit someone whose husband might be arrested to avoid public scandal, Alma's determination to turn in Bertram subsides. Rita's maid warns her against admitting Scooter to her home. As she prepares to greet Scooter, she finds Catherine and Carlo. As Catherine questions her fidelity, Scooter yoo hoos her from the hallway and ushers him out of the house. Catherine is going to search for a reason for papa to divorce Rita. She doesn't need Carlo's money, but she wants to take it away from Rita. Carlo sees Rita kissing Scooter through the window. Alma visits Dee at the diner, wondering if she might be able to stay with a friend for the night to deal with a matter with her father. Alma says there was another woman. Dee says all of the right things, and Alma tells her how proud she is of the woman Dee has become. Catherine is going to the drug store, and she wants Rita to bathe Carlo. She purposely makes his bath colder. She lived up to her end of their marriage bargain, and it's his turn to do his part. She wants someone to give it to while she's still young. Please, die for Rita, she says. But it turns out that Catherine left the pills in the car and returns early. The water is scalding, not cold, but she drained enough before Catherine returned. Dee calls Bertram to say that she was asked to spend the night somewhere else. She's so disappointed in him for seeing another woman. Bertram pulls out his kill kit and writes a suicide note. Dee needs to spend the night with Scooter, but he won't let her in, worrying about a tail. So much for being the good guy. Vern sees her in the rain, and he asks if she needs a lift. She realizes that he's been following her, and he's a gumshoe. She gets in the car, and he'll take her to a motel. Alma arrives home in the rain and stands in her garden, soaking wet, while Mrs. Yost looks on. She walks in on Bertram's suicide. The vial will make it seem like he died of a heart attack, and he directs her to ensure everyone thinks of it that way. Mrs. Yost watches them from across the yard and sneaks up behind the window as Alma demands that Bertram promises never to kill ever again. He mumbles appropriately, and she tosses the item into the trash, which Mrs. Yost hears are murder souvenirs. She digs through the trash. Mrs. Yost decides to climb the trellis to listen some more. Alma slams the window shut on Mrs. Yost's fingers, and she falls back on the shears she had placed upright in the yard. She's dead, and she cannot have that kind of scrutiny on her home. Alma decides to bury her in the front yard as Bertram argues over choices.

Paramount+ has more insight to share with us about Why Women Kill
but Thursday’s Season 2 premiere is ultimately more concerned with why men kill. One man in particular, really. The Marc Cherry-created dark comedy returned on Thursday with two episodes — its first new installments since Season 1 wrapped in October 2019. And this time, instead of the ’60s, ’80s and 2010s, the anthology takes place in 1949, where a plain housewife named Alma Fargos Allison Tolman is desperate to be accepted into the ritzy and exclusive Elysian Park Garden Club. When the Garden Club’s elderly founder passes away, Alma hopes to be considered for the now-vacant spot, and she awkwardly chats up some of the club’s snooty members at lunch one afternoon. Seeming to take pity on Alma, the gorgeous and stylish club president Rita Castillo Once Upon a Times Lana Parrilla invites her to a party at Rita’s that weekend, which will double as a memorial for the club’s late founder. Alma is delighted at the invitation, but her rude neighbor Mrs. Yost takes the wind out of her sails, explaining that the event will merely be a fundraiser, Alma will likely be charged to even attend it, and, as she so unkindly tells Alma, “They don’t let frumps in the Elysian Park Garden Club.” Oh, hush, Mrs. Yost. Alma’s husband, Bertram Into the Badlands Nick Frost — more on him in a minute — gives Alma some money to buy herself a spectacular dress for the party, but the lovely fuchsia number that catches her eye is a steep $800. Instead, she buys some fabric in that same color and decides to make a similar dress. When she’s rummaging through her attic to find a new sewing needle, Alma curiously finds a brooch underneath a chest of drawers in the corner of the attic; it’s a cameo with a tag on it, which reads, “Enid Dolan, Feb. 14, 1945.” The next day, Alma wears both her pink dress which Rita insults and the newly discovered brooch to the garden party, and it’s the latter piece of jewelry that another club member, Grace, notices. Grace explains that her Aunt Enid had one just like it, but Grace found Enid dead on her sofa a few years back, and she assumed her aunt’s nurse swiped the brooch. But after realizing that the inside inscription reads, “To Enid, Love Jack,” Alma returns the brooch to Grace, lying that she bought it at a church rummage sale years ago, but Grace should have her family heirloom back. And the good deed pays off Unbeknownst to Alma, Grace finds Alma incredibly sweet, and she wonders aloud to another club member if perhaps Alma would like to join the group. Later that night, intrigued by the brooch that suddenly appeared in her attic, Alma returns up there and moves aside the chest of drawers, revealing a panel of the wall that falls open. Inside, there’s a sewing box full of similar trinkets — a comb, a pipe, other odds and ends — all of them labeled with someone’s name and a date. Alma takes all of the objects out of the box and looks at them, a bit confused and concerned. Meanwhile, there’s her hubby, a beloved veterinarian who takes great care of his furry patients. At the top of the episode, his first patient of the day is an old pup named Biscuit, whom Bertram lovingly puts down while “Clair De Lune” plays; as he explains to Biscuit’s owner, Maisie, he wants to make even the animals’ final moments enjoyable if he can. Maisie, in turn, is clearly taken with Bertram, inviting him to the club where she sings at night and fretting that he claims to be happily married. That evening, after giving Alma the dough to purchase a nice party dress, Bertram clearly wants to head up to the bedroom with his wife, if you catch my drift. But Alma, too giddy at the prospect of the garden party, isn’t interested — and Bertram instead pays a visit to the club to hear Maisie sing. They share a few drinks, but when he walks Maisie home and she invites him upstairs for a nightcap, Bertram spies a nosy neighbor peeking at the street through her blinds, and Bertram politely rain-checks their drink. The following day, while Alma is at her garden party, Bertram stops by Maisie’s apartment with a bouquet of flowers. She lets him inside, and he notices some past-due medical bills on her coffee table. When Maisie catches Bertram looking at them, she reveals that her doctor has diagnosed her with cirrhosis, and the doc thinks she’s dying. “I know,” Bertram replies, revealing that he’s noticed some worrying symptoms in Maisie — fatigue, jaundiced skin, bruises on her body from a mysterious “condition” she mentioned. But Bertram believes Maisie should enjoy herself while she still can, and he uncorks a bottle of wine for them to share. Not long after Maisie has a glass, she starts feeling woozy
and Bertram nonchalantly shares that he put a sedative ! in her wine. He ushers her over to the couch, and within seconds, she can barely move, save for the tears running down her cheeks as Bertram reveals he plans to euthanize her. His philosophy If we take such good care of our pets and put them down when they’re suffering, why not do the same for humans? Especially when Maisie mentioned she had no friends or family left? And Maisie is left to watch in horror as Bertram pulls a syringe from his bag, injects it between her fingers, then closes Maisie’s eyes after she passes away. Then, as if he didn’t just literally kill a woman, he oh-so-casually sticks that bouquet of flowers in a vase, wipes down everything he touched in Maisie’s apartment, picks up a small folding fan he finds in her living room, then leaves. Summary Why Women Kill returns with a new cast of characters in a new time period, but the same old house full of infidelity and death for another season of darkly comic excess. This recap of Why Women Kill season 2, episode 1, “Secret Beyond the Door”, and Why Women Kill season 2, episode 2, “The Woman in the Window”, contains spoilers. The first season of Why Women Kill on CBS All Access was really rather good, which is worth reminding people of since I haven’t heard anyone talk about it since. Coming courtesy of Marc Cherry of Desperate Housewives fame, it was a very snappily written dark comedy with fantastic characters, costumes, and period details uniting three distinct stories of death and infidelity across three different decades. That ambitious setup, which cast a Pasadena mansion as a kind of lavish interpretation of that house from The Grudge – it was interesting to look at, but you’d never want to live there – has been abandoned for the second season on Paramount+, which is confined to a single post-war timeline focusing primarily on Allison Tolman’s frumpy housewife Alma. Tolman was last seen doing excellent work on the underappreciated Emergence, and she fits right in here. Why Women Kill season 2, episode 1, “Secret Beyond the Door”, introduces her as a put-upon spouse of modest means endlessly fantasizing about being a member of the exclusive, glamorous Elysian Park Garden Club, of which Rita Castillo Lana Parrilla, basically “phwoarr!” in human form is the most prominent member. Rita is also a prominent member of the cast given she’s carrying on an affair with a hot young actor named Scooter Matthew Daddario and would very much like to be rid of her elderly husband, Carlo Daniel Zacapa, 69 but playing a convincing 80. Connections to the first season are obvious from the off. Rita lives in the opulent house, and Jack Davenport, who played that season’s best male character, Lucy Liu’s gay husband, narrates this outing. Social climbing is an obvious theme here as it was there, the production design and costuming are spot on, the post-war period details are very well-observed, and so on, and so forth, to say nothing of all Cherry’s soapy storytelling hallmarks, which are present and correct. But as if to prove that things aren’t going to follow quite the same narrative tracks, it’s established almost immediately that Alma’s seemingly kindly veterinarian husband, Bertram Nick Frost, is a Harold Shipman-style serial killer. This isn’t just revealed in the first two episodes, but by the end of Why Women Kill season 2, episode 2, Alma is well-aware of it, which makes one of the big narrative push-and-pulls whether or not she can keep his activities secret enough not to jeopardize her standing in the garden club. That’s so comically on-brand for this show that I can’t help but giggle at the prospect of it, and it’s complemented well by Rita’s obvious efforts to try and torture and eventually kill her husband without suffering any pushback, legal or otherwise. Those are two fittingly dark storylines that it’ll be fun to follow along with. The only problem so far, at least beyond nitpicks, is what the show plans on doing with an impressive but underused supporting cast that includes Cannon as Alma’s daughter, Dee, who is also sleeping with Scooter, and Jordane Christie as Vern, a private eye hired by Rita to spy on Scooter rather than her husband. Rita’s withering, “If he can’t stick to his vows, why should I?” in justification of her affair is the exact kind of writing Cherry excels in. Either way, it’ll be interesting to see how Why Women Kill Season 2 chooses to split its time between Alma and Rita, what it makes of the single timeline rather than three competing ones, and how it can top the shenanigans of the first season, which amounted to some wonderful payoffs. Whatever happens, I’m happy to see the show back in business, and it’ll be a laugh recapping each episode. WhyWomen Kill. Drama. 2 seasons English. 2 SEASONS AVAILABLE. With only one story, it seemed drawn out and boring at times. The characters weren't as fun. The ending was alright. I hope that if there is a season 3, then they will go back to season 1's format. Jan 25, 2022 Alma is bad. I don't like Rita's death at the end. Jan 17, 2022 Great show. Well written, well acted and well received. Dec 09, 2021 Its so funny, I love shows like this. Nov 25, 2021 Seeing how brilliant the first season was, I kept wondering how they could top that with an entirely new story and cast, and oh did they fucking do that! By removing the trouble of juggling three stories simultaneously, they were able to have a perfectly interconnected and woven characters that were brought to life by a brilliant cast! Allison Tolman's portrayal of Alma was gobsmacking excellent, and her character arc was just beautiful to behold. I hope this isn't the last hurrah for this series, as I eagerly expect the third season. Nov 05, 2021 It is just amazing. I have rarely enjoyed a series this much. A gripping crime story, a delicious dark comedy with great acting, incredible costumes, very well chosen music, and very beautiful cinematography. Highly recommended. Oct 18, 2021 We *really* loved both seasons of this show - great acting, great writing, great period piece set decoration, nicely paced, hilarious. Every scene is a treat. It's as good as Fargo another brilliant series that has different casts each season, but I'm guessing Women Who Kill might appeal to a wider audience. I can't get enough of both shows. Another connection is that the lead actress of Season 2, Allison Tolman, played the Frances McDormand archetype character in Fargo Season 1. Can't wait for new seasons of both shows. Season 2 of Why Women Kill has tremendous voice-over narration by the actor who played one of the husbands from Season 1. The subtle comic timing of the narration is one of the high points. More like this please! Aug 31, 2021 This was just AWFUL. Season one was plentiful with three different stories surrounding the same house, this one is the same murderous housewife. AND THAT IS IT! She couldn't act AT ALL. Predictible and incredibly stupid aspirations. What a WASTE. I'm ashamed my husband agreed to watch this with me. What happened to writing, etc? TERRIBLE and UTTER TRASH. Aug 28, 2021 I definitely enjoyed the first season way more. The drastically quick character development left alot to be desired in the second half of the season where it felt like we were just circling the drain to the inevitable conclusion. Boring.
